THE Bright Tennis Club recently held its annual senior and junior club championships under perfect autumn conditions.
Four divisions were contested in the junior club championships; a special mention to Ian Ellen (past president) who attended the day and presented the Gwen Jameson Award to a very deserving recipient in Amelie Thompson.
Amelie has been involved in the tennis club for a number of years and is a great role model for the club’s younger members.
Girls 12 and under winner Mair Williamson was too strong for her opponents, winning all four sets in the round robin format with Amelie Kerr coming in as runner-up, with three sets in total.
The boys 12 years and under division was the largest division of the day and well done to the round robin winners Leonard Ciolli, Lochie Russell and Angus Murrells who all went on to contest a round robin final; it was so close in fact that two players ended up on the same points at the end of the round.
In a hard fought tie-breaker final Angus Murrells ended up winning over Lochie Russell 7-5.
Girls 14 and under champion was Claire Williamson who defeated Edith Cafe in a tie breaker decider 7-2; both girls came into the tiebreaker match having won two sets each.
Boys 14 and under champion was Tom Russell; in a hard fought match Tom played a strong final against Stefan Barnard, eventually coming away with the win 6-3.
Both players came into the final match undefeated.
A smaller field contested the men’s singles competition than previous years, with a round robin competition seeing newcomer Minter Barnard win all of his matches, defeating long time club champion David Chlebna 6-4.
The women’s singles competition was a round robin format with 2019 champion Jody Vlahandreas winning all her sets.
Runner-up Mel Worth fought hard but was eventually beaten by Vlahandreas 6-3.
This year saw two singles champions Jody Vlahandreas and Minter Barnard join forces to form an unbeatable combination in the mixed doubles, losing only one game in the entire round robin format to secure the title over runner-ups Michelle Yarwood and Russell Shem 6-0.
Russell Shem and David Chlebna played strongly in the men’s doubles round robin format; Shem and Chlebna beat runner-ups Craig Thompson and Raph Baris 6-2.
The women’s doubles was won by Jody Vlahandreas and Michelle Yarwood; the winners won all their sets, proving too strong for runner-ups Heike Fleckenstein and Tracy Carey 6-1.
