Students explore various vocations for work experience week

By Lily Picciocchi, on work experience Over the past week, dozens of Year 10 students from Myrtleford P-12 College have participated in work experience as a part of their curriculum. Jack Matheson carried out his work experience at Myrtleford's 'Nutrien Ag Solutions' with Greg Ivone, as well as spending a number of days at TAFE. “This morning, Jack was weighing cattle, so he gets to see that side of it," Mr Ivone said. "It gives him an opportunity to get a broader view of the industry as a whole.” Jack said the agriculture industry really interested him and he enjoyed going to people’s properties to see their different set-ups and work with cows. “The work varies, but we have mostly been going around helping farmers, marking calves and drenching and vaccinating cattle,” he said. “I grew up on a farm and I wanted to see what else I could do in agriculture.” Jack said he could see himself working in the agriculture industry in the future. Fellow student Jacob McAuliffe has woken up at 5am each morning for his work experience at Alpine Health in Myrtleford. He has seen the night crew hand over to the morning crew, upon arrival at 7am each day and is normally assigned to shadow one or multiple medical professionals. "I observe what they’re doing, I’ll ask questions from time to time, then have a lunch break and go to the next group of people, then go home," he said. “I've learned tonnes of things about healthcare and all the different careers in this hospital. “I've really enjoyed doing activities with the residents in Barwidgee Lodge, nursing and physiotherapy. “It’s been great to [learn] and I just want to help people get better.” Physiotherapist Fiona McLennan, who was one of Jacob's instructors for the week, said the hospital typically takes on one work experience student each year. "Jacob has been really interested in learning," she said. "He has taken information on board and understood patients as people, instead of just viewing them from a medical standpoint." Student Emma Pitman performed her work experience with Marg Phillips from 'Creature Crafts', an art supply store in Myrtleford and assisted in the set-up of the art displays at this year's Myrtleford Show. She helped adhere artworks to the display walls and arrange group and individual pieces in their respective category for assessment. “I enjoyed getting to see what people submitted and it’s nice to get to look at everything before show day," she said. "Even though this probably isn't something I'm going to do when I'm older, it's nice and relaxing. “The work is repetitive, but it's a calming repetitive.” Emma carried out her work experience along with attending her accelerated Maths Methods classes and said in 10 years’ time, she sees herself working in STEM.
