ON Saturday, October 15, the Bright Tennis Club will be celebrating 31 years of being in its current location in Pioneer Park.

Formed 130 years ago in 1892, the club was described as a "grass court" in a private street in the centre of the then township.

This location was on Station Street, adjacent to the later erected Bright Entertainment Centre.

At the time of the relocation to the present site in Pioneer Park there were two asphalt courts located on the south side of Bakers Gully Creek and two asphalt courts located to the north on a slightly lower level.

A clubhouse was built at the Station Street site by volunteers in 1970, before the club moved to its current location at Pioneer Park in Bright in 1990.

The original clubhouse was rebuilt on the new site by members of the club and friends of the club and the new complex was opened in October 1991.

Club president Tracy Carey said the original plan was to celebrate the 30 year anniversary in October 2021, however, this was put on hold due to COVID.

All past and present members, or anyone that has an interest in the club, are invited to attend from 12pm on Saturday, October 15.

The Club Championships are also being held for ladies' singles and men's and ladies' doubles in the afternoon, which all members are encouraged to sign up for.

It will also provide a real viewing spectacle for visitors.

A free barbecue will be provided during the day, and to create a real Wimbledon atmosphere all players and spectators are being encouraged to come in their finest whites with champagne, strawberries and cream being available throughout the afternoon.

The Bright Tennis Club Spring/Summer Mixed Pennant Comp is just around the corner, and anyone interested in playing is encouraged to rock up to the courts tonight from 6pm, or contact president Tracy Carey at tracycarey2@gmail.com.
