MARCH 20 to 21 will see the return of the Alpe de Buffalo junior cycling race.
Now in its 10th year, the race is for junior cyclists up to the under 19 category with competitors racing for both overall tour honours as well as the State Hillclimb Championship, up the iconic Mt Buffalo climb.
The race has typically attracted more than 100 riders from as far away as Tasmania, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland and has historically involved a time trial and a road race straight up the Mt Buffalo Road.
This year, the playing field will be levelled with the addition of a criterium race around the relatively flat Pioneer Park in Bright.
Organiser Paul Meehan said the Alpe de Buffalo is a prestigious event with many past winners going on to have careers in cycling at a high level.
“We’ve seen Luke Plapp win the World Juniors Championship and is now a professional cyclist as well as Sarah Gigante, who at 20 years of age has won the juniors and elite level Australian Championships,” he said.
The Alpe de Buffalo is run by the Hawthorn Cycling Club, and proudly supported by Jellis Craig Hawthorn and Grollo Homes, partners who made this race possible.
