MYRTLEFORD’s A1 top of the table bowls side got quite a scare against Wangaratta who were without a few players and sit outside the four.
Myrtleford managed to hold onto just a five-shot win, 74 shots and 14 points to Wangaratta 69 shots and four points.
The Mick Dwyer, Jim Murtagh, Royston Smith and Wally Dunstone combination scored a strong 24/16 shot victory while Mary Paton, Karen Nicholls, Michelle Van Praagh and Mikey Clayton held on to record a 19/16 winning score line.
Pete Matty’s team went down 16/20 and the Geoff Kidd combination failed by just two shots 15/17.
This round seven game marks the halfway stage of the home and away season with Myrtleford sitting pretty with six wins and just one lose so far this season.
The result sees Myrtleford on top by percentage only from Rutherglen with the two clubs set to clash next Saturday at Rutherglen in what will be a season-defining game.
The B1 side travelled to the Moira greens in Benalla and were too good for the home team winning 65 shots and 12 points to Moira 52 shots and just two points.
The win puts them in second spot with a 24-point break over the fifth placed team.
The club is very keen to get this side up into the A5 grade next season.
They play the bottom side Rutherglen at Myrtleford next Saturday and will be looking for another big win.
After taking a big defeat the previous weekend, Graham Burrington’s team turned things around with a commanding 28/10 win.
Jeff Stagg skippered his rink to another win 23/19 and in a rare defeat the Les Brown rink went down 14/23.
The B2 side was no match for Moira’s side at Moira going down 38/84 shots and collecting no points on the day.
It was a disappointing result as the Myrtleford side was second on the ladder and while, they remain in the four, they now clash with Beechworth who are fourth and only four points behind them.
In other bowls news, the club proudly has both ladies and men’s teams through to the knockout stages in the Ovens and Murray 60 and Over Pairs.
In the ladies, Cheryl Lewis and Mary Paton will represent the club, while Norm Hallett, Geoff Kidd, Lance Symons and Greg Robbins are in the men’s event.
We wish all six competitors great bowling at Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort on Thursday, November 21 as they proudly wear the club colours.
