NOT many people can imagine an 11 year old kid from Ovens shooting down a racetrack at speeds approaching 100km/h, but that’s exactly what young Noah Dixon loves to do on a weekend.

The up-and-coming karter has been racing at the Albury Wodonga Kart Club for the last four years, after falling in love with the sport though somewhat peculiar means.

“I was watching Formula 1, and Daniel Ricardo was in a press conference,” Dixon said.

“He was talking about how he got into go-karting, he said he was late getting into it at age nine and I said ‘hey I’m seven, I could do that’.

“Mum and Dad took me to lots of races for months and months to try and get me to not do it.

“Eventually I just wanted to do it so much that I just pushed them and I got into it; it was pretty fun after that.”

One of Dixon’s biggest successes came in his first year of racing in 2019, when he took second place in the Golden Power series in the Cadet 9s division.

“The Golden Power series goes to six tracks all around Victoria,” Dixon said.

“In the end if you get in the top three you get to go to a special presentation; I got runner up in 2019, that was good.”

Dixon is two races into the 2021 series, this time racing in the Cadet 12s for kids aged 10 to 12.

“I’m not going too bad, we’ve done the Rochester Golden Power and Numurkah Golden Power already,” he said.

“In two weeks we’re going to Puckapunyal to race there, then Bendigo and Albury/Wodonga which is my club, then we finish off at Morwell.

“I’m really excited that Morwell is last this year because Morwell has a thing of always being wet, but I’m hoping it might not be that wet this year.

“It’ll be fine if it is but sometimes it’s harder in the wet.”

Dixon lives for the speed of the race, and has a clear goal in mind.

“My dream is to get into Formula 1, it’s a long way away but it’s getting there,” he said.

“Some of the speeds the higher classes of go-karts can get are like 145km/h; I get 98 km/h down the back straight.

“It’s very, very quick but I wish it could go quicker.

“This year we’re going to try and do lots of Golden Powers and start getting up to the nationals so next year we can really go full pelt at the nationals and try and get top five in it, at least.

“So we’re hoping to do that and who knows what will happen then.

“In juniors, almost seniors, you try to get picked up by a formula category.”
