AN Antarctic polar blast is providing Mt Hotham and Falls Creek alpine resorts with their biggest dumps of snow for the 2024 season this week.
Both resorts were already almost knee deep in more than 20cms of fresh snowfall in the 24 hours to Tuesday morning, with up to 50cms of snow expected for the week, and more forecast into next week.
"The powder hounds are in for an awesome week at Hotham with freshies (fresh snow) to be found all across the resort," Hotham marketing coordinator Alex Pankiw said.
"We've been waiting a while, but Mother Nature has definitely come to the party this week...with some of the best pow days of the season."
Mt Hotham Chamber of Commerce president Steve Belli said the falls are a welcome boost, with visitation to the resort and overall spend a "little bit down" so far this season, perhaps attributed to cost of living pressures and fairly conservative natural snowfalls to date.
"Still, the lift company has done a great job with the snowmaking and grooming to get the on-snow season up and away, with lifts and terrain opened since mid-June" he said.
"Day visitation has been very strong.
"These falls will lay the foundation for the rest of the season.
"There are still some very good value deals available, offering visitors a range of experiences."
Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce president Michelle Lovell said snowfalls on Monday had already transformed the village into a winter wonderland.
"The village streets are covered in snow and my son was able to ski to school this morning...we're definitely a ski-in, ski-out village," Ms Lovell said.
"This weeks snow will certainly open up more terrain and lifts."
Ms Lovell said the resort had already been enjoying a great season, with significant visitation over the past two weeks of Victorian school holidays, carrying over this week with NSW and South Australian school holidays.
"We've had the south facing side of the resort opened for weeks and people had been enjoying some blue bird days and great weather," she said.
"These snowfalls will really make the season...and there are some great last minute accommodation opportunities for people."
All visitors to the mountains are reminded they must carry chains and fit when and where directed.
