Police pleased as 'Operation Roadwise' sees no collisions

LOCAL police had mixed results in driver behavior from Operation Roadwise over the holiday driving operation In a collaborative effort to monitor the safety of our roads over the holidays, officers from the Mount Beauty, Bright and Myrtleford police stations worked with the Wangaratta highway patrol to deploy Operation Roadwise in the Alpine Shire. The program ran from Friday, December 13 to midnight on January 1 and focused on impaired driving, speed, fatigue, distraction and vulnerable road users including cyclists, motorcycle (solo) and pedestrian activity. Acting Sergeant James Schifferly from the Wangaratta highway patrol, reported there were no collisions in the Alpine area over the holiday period. "This is a very pleasing result, considering the higher level of holiday traffic in the area," he said. "However, it was disappointing to see there were still a number of drink- and drug-affected drivers during the festive season. "It was also disappointing to see people speeding on our roads, given there were more vehicles around while people were on holiday. "Despite this, as a whole it was quite pleasing to see that no-one ended up in an accident." There was no actual data collected during the campaign due to ongoing industrial action.
