Myrtleford timber mill expansion a "significant boost" for Ovens Valley

Myrtleford’s largest employer is planning for the future, delivering a "significant boost" to the Ovens Valley economy, according to Nationals' MP for Ovens Valley Tim McCurdy. Mr McCurdy visited the Myrtleford timber mill last week to meet with new owners Porta and discuss their plans for the facility’s future. Purchased by Porta from Carter Holt Harvey in November last year, the facility - which is Australia's largest plywood mill - currently employs just under 200 people. Mr McCurdy said the mill has traditionally produced around 90,000 cubic metres of timber, with Porta's planned expansion set to significantly increase production capacity. He said the proposed investment by Porta was a tremendous vote of confidence in Myrtleford and the wider region. “It was fantastic to meet with the owners and hear about their plans for this important local business,” Mr McCurdy said after meeting with company CEO Jim Snelson. “Investments like this are something to be proud of. "They create jobs, support families, and strengthen our regional economy. “As Myrtleford’s largest employer, the mill plays a vital role in our community. "I thank Porta for investing in the Ovens Valley and recognising the enormous potential of our region. “I fully support their plans and look forward to seeing the opportunities this investment creates for local workers and families.” Mr McCurdy said supporting business growth also meant ensuring there were enough homes for workers and their families. “When major employers invest and create jobs, we need to make sure people have somewhere to live," he said. “I will work with Alpine Shire Council to help navigate the processes involved in delivering more housing for families relocating to the Ovens Valley. “We want people to move here, build their careers, raise their families, and become part of our community. “Myrtleford has a proud history and a bright future, and I will continue to champion the businesses investing in our people and our region.” Speaking with the Myrtleford Times/Alpine Observer earlier this year, Mr Snelson said the Myrtleford mill was "an important Australian manufacturing asset and we're committed to building its capability, strengthening its future and ensuring it continues to contribute to the Myrtleford community for many years to come". "Our focus is on backing local capability: investing in the mill, supporting the team and ensuring we remain competitive against imported product," he said.
