WILD winds, lightening and heavy rainfall lashed parts of the Alpine Shire on Sunday, cutting power to thousands of homes in the district but fortunately causing minimal damage.

Around 3400 homes from Wangaratta to Myrtleford lost power for around six hours from 6.30am, and around 373 homes in Myrtleford had to wait until mid afternoon for power to be restored.

Myrtleford SES controller, David Coates, said unit members had a busy day, responding to their first call for assistance around 5.40am Sunday.

"There was a report of a tree that had come down over part of the Great Alpine Road, on the Everton side of town, near Bowman's Forest," he said.

"Fortunately, there was not that much traffic to be disrupted at that time of the morning.

"Overall, we responded to seven reports of trees down, or parts of trees down throughout the day, which is a significant number of jobs.

"At both Whorouly and Gapsted there were trees down and the other four incidents were all within residential streets in Myrtleford.

"In two of those cases, we were called to assess damage to residential roofs, but fortunately the damage in both cases was quite minor; we didn't need to climb up on the roof for any reason to make the buildings safe.

"Fortunately, we were able to attend all requests for assistance and there wasn't much serious property damage."

Acting Sergeant Scott Baldock of Bright police said there were several incidents of trees down around Bright and also near Harrietville, but they were attended to very quickly by Bright SES members.

Unit controller Graham Gales said eight members of the Bright SES responded to five reports of trees down - four on roads and one on a footpath - between 6am and 4pm.

"They (trees) were scattered across the Great Alpine Road; from Porepunkah to Harrietville and we were able to clear them fairly quickly," he said.

Rainfall totals across the shire varied, with the Bureau of Meteorology reporting Sunday rainfall highest at Upper Buckland (57mm) and Mt Buffalo (55mm), followed by Lake Buffalo (48mm), Harrietville (45mm), Mt Hotham (44mm), Myrtleford and Falls Creek (29mm), Bright (23mm) and Eurobin (22mm).
