POLICE continue to investigate after a driver was found deceased in an overturned car in Buffalo River on Saturday morning.

The vehicle was spotted by a passerby in waters off Buffalo River Road at about 9am.

A 24-year-old man, who is yet to be formally identified, was the sole occupant inside the vehicle.

Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Myrtleford SES unit controller, David Coates, said members were among the first on scene at around 9.30am.

“The Wodonga and Wangaratta SES units were also involved, deploying an inflatable SES boat to investigate the submerged vehicle on site, prior to the arrival of the police divers.

“After the police divers concluded their part, the car was removed by a private tow contractor.

“Our role, as directed by police was mostly traffic control and finished at approximately 6:15pm that evening."

Mr Coates said the Myrtleford SES has been to a number of traffic crashes in the area recently, especially over events such as long-weekend drives and holidays, due to people maybe not being familiar with the local roads.
