COMMUNITY members in Myrtleford and surrounds are invited to take part in a new leadership initiative, designed to strengthen community connections and build local capacity.

The Amplify Myrtleford Community Leadership Program, delivered by Alpine Valleys Community Leadership (AVCL), will equip participants with the skills, confidence, and networks to drive positive change in their communities.

Funded by Regional Development Victoria through the Tiny Towns Fund, with co-contribution from Alpine Shire Council, this free program provides a chance for community members to deepen their leadership potential and contribute to a thriving region.

The program will create pathways for community members to connect, collaborate, and build social capital in ways that align with shared aspirations.

It was developed in response to strong interest from locals who had undertaken previous programs through AVCL, and wanted to bring a similar initiative to their own community.

Designed with input from a local advisory group, the program will be facilitated by Susan Benedyka, who brings extensive experience in leadership development and a deep connection to the region.

Advisory group member, Deb Geddes spoke of her own experience.

“I undertook a program with AVCL in 2023, and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience," Ms Geddes said.

"It was a great journey that provided insight into my own learning and leadership skills.

"I had the opportunity to meet like-minded people and engage in a wide range of workshops where meaningful discussions were held.

"I gained valuable perspectives on the resilience of our communities and how we can plan for the future.

"It was incredibly rewarding to connect with people who share a commitment to strengthening our communities and the wider region.”

Deb encouraged anyone who was considering the opportunity to apply and participate in the program.

Deb said this was a great opportunity: an experience that can open doors and deepen connections in ways they might not expect.

Through a series of workshops and facilitated discussions, participants will explore ways to strengthen relationships, enhance communication skills, and contribute to a shared sense of wellbeing.

Sessions will cover conflict resolution, public communication, and community sustainability, equipping participants with practical tools to support their communities effectively.

The program will also include engagement with regional agencies and services, along with a visit to an Incident Control Centre to provide insights into emergency response coordination and disaster preparedness.

AVCL executive officer Madeline Hines said the program offers a valuable opportunity for participants to gain practical skills while strengthening their connections within the community.

“It’s about building confidence and strengthening relationships so people can contribute in ways that are meaningful to them and their community," Ms Hines said.

The program will commence on 23rd March 2025, running over eight sessions through to early July.

It is open to all aged 18 and over, with a connection to Myrtleford and surrounding townships.

Thanks to grant funding, the program is free to participate.

Applications are open until March 7 or until capacity is reached.
