BICYCLE Network’s Peaks Challenge attracted more than 1800 cyclists to the Alpine area last weekend, vying to be crowned King or Queen of the Peak.
The 235km course started and finished in Falls Creek, and took cyclists to Bright, up Mt Hotham, through Omeo and along the Bogong High Plains Road.
Favourable weather and a positive atmosphere among the cyclists led to some impressive times, including a new course record for women riders.
Justine Barrow crossed the line in a record seven hours and 34 minutes; Barrow was also crowned Queen of the Peaks, with the fastest time up the course’s three main climbs of Tawonga Gap, Mt Hotham and the back of Falls Creek.
Stinus Kaempe was the first male across the line, finishing in seven hours and eight minutes; Mark O’Brian won the King of the Peaks and recorded a seven hours and 30 minute completion time.
Bicycle Network general manager of events Rebecca Lane said it was fantastic to hold the event again.
“It has been a long 12 months since we got to see the smiles on the faces of riders crossing the finish line and we're so happy we were able to experience it again," Ms Lane said.
“A big thank you goes out to all the riders and supporters who adjusted to an event village with a COVID-safe layout and maintained good hygiene throughout the weekend."
