THE Ablett name is set to once again grace the town of Myrtleford and its football club, with dual Brownlow medalist and AFL legend, Gary Ablett Jr, planning a visit to the Alpine township at the end of next month.

Ablett Jr will attend a training session of Myrtleford’s Alpine Saints Football Club, before being the guest of honour at a ticketed event that will help to raise funds for the footy club.

The event will also feature an auction of sorts, with Ablett Jr set to sell off some paraphernalia for a charity of his choosing.

Speaking about the star's appearance, Alpine Saints club president, Ian Wales, said he was delighted that Ablett Jr would be able to come and visit Myrtleford and the club.

“We’re all very excited about it,” said Wales.

“He’s going to come down to club training on Thursday night (February 25), and he’ll be able to mingle with some of the players, meet Jake (Sharp) and Dawson (Simpson), be on the ground for a little bit and maybe even have a kick of the footy.

“Then once training is over, he’ll (Ablett Jr) head upstairs to the pavilion with the players and people who have bought tickets to the event, and it should be a great night.

“I think the evening will be a great chance to launch the 2021 season too, and get footy back at the front of people’s minds again after what has been a pretty difficult last 12 months.”

Wales said that it would be great to see an Ablett back on McNamara Reserve, a place where both Ablett Jr’s father and great uncle played decades ago.

“It’s a very nice sportsman’s nod,” he said.

“Obviously his great uncle Len (Len George Ablett) was a big deal at the club, being president for over 20 years and pretty much being responsible for the club making it into the Ovens and Murray league back in 1950.

“And his father, Ablett Sr, played here in ’83, and that season with the club did his career a world of good, and for the people who were around in Myrtleford at the time, it was pretty spectacular to watch him play.”

Anyone who’s interested in attending the event should visit the Myrtleford Alpine Saints Football Club Facebook page for further information.
