Wildlife workshop sheds light on sustainability

The Upper Ovens Valley Landcare Group (UOVLG) hosted its 'Trees for Wildlife and Pest Control' sustainability workshop on Saturday 24 October at the Bright Senior Citizens' Centre. Around 20 members of the community showed up on the day to learn all about birds and the natural environment. Brendan Christy, an expert from the Corowa Landcare group, spoke to the sustainability-minded group about managing Myna birds, and Birdlife Australia's Ben Humphries provided information on the structured planting of trees and other ways to encourage native birds, such as the endangered Gang gang cockatoo. "The workshop was very engaging," vice president of UOVLG Martyn Paterson said. "Our two excellent guest speakers, Ben and Brendan, conveyed lots of information. "[Sessions like these really highlight] what we're trying to achieve." Mr Paterson said the next sustainability workshop will include details on how to grow native plants and information about mistletoe. "A lot of people have a misconception about mistletoe killing the trees, but in fact they're very good at encouraging bird life," he said. "Underneath the mistletoe on the ground, you get a lot of insect life, a lot of larvae and plenty of animals who come and scratch around. "Rather than just saying, 'That kills the trees', we have to work out that mistletoe is an important part of the ecosystem."
