THE Liberal and National parties have committed $480,000 to overhaul the lighting system at the Dederang Recreation Reserve in order to improve usability of the ground for local sporting clubs.

The major overhaul includes replacing the outdated wiring and electrical system to improve the load capacity of the system, and allow for new, high wattage lights to be installed to help illuminate the ground.

Dederang–Mount Beauty Football Netball Club president Richie Kreuzer said new lighting would be fantastic, not only for the club, but also for the reserve's role as an emergency gathering point.

According to Mr Kreuzer, the football club could use improved lights for night training and night matches, and the local cricket club could also benefit as well.

Nationals MP for Ovens Valley, Tim McCurdy, said local sports are important for regional communities, and needs all the support it can get.

"Small clubs and towns don't have the same ability as bigger clubs to get people through the gates, therefore have it harder raising funds for much needed works such as overhauling the lights at Dederang," he said.

"By investing in these clubs, we are giving back to the local community, and helping to drive sports in the regions."
