A CROWD of around 60 people were delighted to attend the opening of the new Everton Tennis Courts last Sunday evening.

In the picturesque surrounds of the Everton Recreation Reserve and Sports Complex, guests enjoyed a sausage sizzle and were treated to reflections of the original court construction, which took place 40 years earlier, by original committee member Max Allen.

Everton Tennis Club president Eleisha Fraser thanked council and all contractors and funders for the new works, followed by the official opening by the Mayor Cr Dean Rees.

Attending members of the Project Committee of the original courts - Arthur Bennett, Ron Dawson, Dennis Heywood and Max Allen were invited to turn on the new lights before enthusiastic players took to the courts for a short round robin tournament.

Tegan Allen of Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria also provided special glasses that depicted various types of vision loss and unique tennis balls that challenged players to experience playing tennis while visually impaired.

The new courts, constructed by Wangaratta Excavations and Dry Hire, have been coated with an acrylic surface called Laykold which is the official surface of the US Open and Miami and Canadian Open tournaments.

Everton’s night tennis competition commenced on Wednesday, November 1.

Any interested players are encouraged to contact club president Eleisha Fraser on 0413 984 605 to register their names.

"New players will be made warmly welcome," Ms Fraser said.
