SPEED enthusiasts better start revving their engines, because in a few short weeks, open wheel racing is set to return to the Myrtleford Speedway for the first time in over 20 years.

The Myrtleford Speedway Club have been hard at work getting the track picture perfect for the two day event, set to start on Saturday, May 6.

Upwards of 50 participants are expected to race in the event, and club president Glen Walch said the track had undergone a series of upgrades which will make the event a truly spectacular one for racers and spectators alike.

"It's all looking good for that meet, there's been a heap of work done at the track," he said.

"We've ended up doing a heap of earthworks that we've been planning to do for a long time.

"That track, the whole time it's existed, the spectators have only been allowed to be along the back straight.

"What we've done, because we're shifting the gates around near the start/finish line and filling in what was the space behind them, we're going to extend the spectator fence so now the spectators can not only be on the back straight, then can also be in turn three and four, and right around near the start line.

"It's not only going to be better for the spectators viewing–wise, but it's going to increase our capacity at least another 50–60 per cent again in spectator numbers.

"We're really looking forward to it."

Walch said there was a palpable sense of excitement around the club, eager to facilitate a massive event.

"We're absolutely excited, everyone can't wait, we're really looking forward to it," he said.

"There's a really good buzz around the club because things are just going forward.

"We're expecting 50–60 entrants and a lot of Victorians, which will be good for the track and for them.

"The cars haven't competed at Myrtleford for over 20 years, it just became a bike only track just because of the way it worked with other clubs.

"There've been go–karts but there hasn't been proper open wheel speedcars or anything, so everyone's really looking forward to that."
