AS the summer season finally gets under way, you could have been mistaken for thinking this was the case.

On Monday, January 6, things were looking good on the course - the weather looked promising but looks can be deceiving.

A group of 20 players teed off in hot and humid conditions, and only 14 finished their rounds.

The other remaining six players succumbed to the wet and windy conditions and scuttled back to the club house wet and forlorn.

Winners: Graham Barrow 18 H/C, an astounding 40 points, then followed up by Andy Armstrong, 19 H/C 37 points.

Ball winners: Mark Stephenson 35 points C/B, Robert Taylor 35 points, Don Grimes 34 points and Bill Bussau 33 points.

Wednesday, January 8, Ladies Stableford.

NTPs - 6th: Roschelle Harrison.

Saturday, January 11, all gender Stableford competition.

The competition that was held on the 11th of January was notable for two outstanding things.

Firstly, not since Greg Norman first won the British Open Golf in 1986 has a field of 84 players teed off on a Saturday in one competition, and secondly, a player with a handicap of plus two has returned a score off the stick of 66 shots and still didn’t win the competition.

The field of 84 players began their quest and three are still missing in action.

Ten of the 84 played under their handicaps, while the remainder made up the numbers, results as follows.

Winners: David Bakkum 22 H/C 40 points C/B, Matthew Grossman from the Corowa Golf Club, plus 2 H/C 40 points C/B.

This magnificent score included seven birdies, 10 pars and one solitary bogey, and the bogey was on the 18th hole.

Steve McDowell 15 H/C 40 points, Dennis Panga Pangrazio 29 H/C 39 points C/B, Nick Moschis 22 H/C 39 points C/B, Cameron Wood 40 H/C (but not for much longer) 39 points C/B.

Ball winners: Graham Barrow 39 points, Ray the Borsch Borschmann 37 points, Lauren Velicki 37 points, Tina Cook 37 points, Kevin Reed 36 points C/B, Greg Walsh 36 points C/B, John Walsh 36 points, Phil-Bardsley Smith 35 points C/B, Lou Glavan 35 points C/B.

NTPs - 3rd: Andy Armstrong, 6th: Wayne Curtis, 10th second shot: Ray Borschmann (that’s a surprise), 11th: Andrew Badrock, 16th: Lauren Velicki.

Bright Golf Guru thought of the week, “There is always the possibility of a Hole in One, but highly improbable.”
