THE Myrtleford Bowls Club singles champion was decided on the weekend in what was a thrilling match between Geoff Kidd and Michael ‘Mick’ Dwyer.
Kidd got the jump on Dwyer and was leading eight shots to zero in the race to 25.
In a very entertaining match of high-quality bowls on a beautifully groomed green running at 16 seconds, Dwyer slowly clawed his way back into the game.
The contest took 30 ends before Dwyer finally got the better of Kidd, 25 to 23 shots.
Both players played beautifully on the fast green and the spectators were glued to their seats.
Either player would have been a worthy winner but the long-time servant of the club Dwyer finally won his first singles club championship and his name goes on the honour board.
Elsewhere, the Ovens and Murray women's side brought home silver from recent State Region Sides Championships held at Ballarat from January 10-12.
The Myrtleford Bowls Club was very well represented by Peta Mattys, Karen Nicholls and Michelle van Praagh.
In total, 16 lawn bowls regions across Victoria came together to compete, sending teams of 12 players.
The competition was broken up into two tiers of eight teams, with the Ovens & Murray team placing in the gold tier.
The Ovens and Murray ladies were the only team to win all three games to go into Sunday's final.
They began exceptionally well and built up a big lead before going down to a very strong and experienced Melbourne team from Sandbelt region 57-50.
