PUBLIC submissions to the Victorian Government on a proposed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) development in Dederang close tomorrow.

The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) is responsible for assessing the proposal by Mint Renewables.

The company is seeking to develop the facility with a nominal installed capacity of 400MWh on a four hectare site approximately 2km north-west of Dederang.

The proposal is one of two large-scale BESS projects in the Dederang area seeking to support the state's ongoing transition to renewable energy.

A Mint Renewables spokesperson said the company encourages any interested party to participate and have their views formally heard by the Minister for Planning.

"Any person who may be affected by the proposed permit being granted may object or make other submissions to the responsible authority," the spokesperson said.

They said if and when a planning permit is obtained, next steps will include undertaking major contractor procurement, working to prepare management plans and ensure compliance with permits and regulations prior to construction.

"Next steps will include continuing to refine the way Mint shares benefits with the wider community," the spokesperson said.

Council has been notified of the planning application and invited by DTP to submit feedback under Section 52 of the Planning and Environment Act 1987.

Alpine Shire Mayor, Cr Sarah Nicholas, encouraged the community to engage directly with the State Government process.

“Council is not the decision-maker on these projects, but we strongly encourage anyone with an interest to make a formal submission to the Department of Transport and Planning,” she said.

Mayor Nicholas said public submissions will help councillors gain a better understanding of community viewpoints on the issue.

Councillors are to meet and consider its submission to the State Government at council's February monthly meeting at the Mt Beauty Community Centre at 5pm on Tuesday, February 25.

Council’s submission - which has an extended timeline - is one of many that DTP will consider as part of their assessment process.
