AFTER more than seven years of operation, the Porepunkah Op Shop will be closing its doors next month on November 15.
Volunteer Katarina Hughes said the closure comes due to the current location in Station Street no longer being available and low volunteer numbers.
“As our current location will no longer be available in the near future and due to our current number of volunteers, we have made the tough choice to close the op shop,” she said.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers who have dedicated their time and gone above and beyond to support our cause.
“The op shop has been a go-to destination for regular customers seeking affordable bargains.
“Our aim was to provide items at low prices, ensuring everyone could find a great deal.
“Over time, we have built friendships and created a gathering place for locals.
“It is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to the community as we close our doors.”
Ms Hughes said they were proud to have raised funds for the local community.
“We have donated $20,000 to Porepunkah CFA, as well as $1000 each year to two students through the ongoing LEAP scholarship program for year six graduates at Porepunkah Primary School," she said.
“Additionally, this year, we will be placing a memorial seat at the Porepunkah Hall in memory of Neville Robinson for recognition of the dedication to the community over his years.
“In addition we have made further local contributions; Bright Soccer Club, Porepunkah Primary School, Porepunkah Panthers Baseball Club and the Border Oncology Centre.
“We have supported remote op shops in the Northern Territory and Western Australia along with sustainable efforts to dispose of unwanted items.
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, instead of our annual Christmas party, we organised Christmas hamper bags for Porepunkah families.
“Thanks to the collaboration of local businesses, this event was a success, with families driving by the Punkah Op Shop to collect their special Christmas goodies while adhering to COVID-19 restrictions.
“Lastly, we have donated the remaining shop fittings to various organisations, including Bright Lions, Myrtleford Show Society, Bright Op Shop (two locations), and Mount Beauty Op Shop.”
Ms Hughes said the op shop now invites further discussion on how best to use the remaining funds to further benefit the community, please email katarina_hughes@outlook.com.
Despite the closure, the annual Community Christmas Party will still be held this year.
“Together with Porepunkah CFA, we have proudly facilitated a Community Christmas Party, fostering a sense of togetherness and joy for the families of Porepunkah and surrounds,” Ms Hughes said.
The event will take place on November 26, from 4pm to 8pm, at the Porepunkah Hall, featuring free food, music, games, face painting, and a visit from Santa at 5pm.
