Loss of service would have significant impact on Falls Creek: MP

The Victorian government has been asked to urgently intervene to save the Falls Creek childcare and kindergarten service.

Nationals MP for Ovens Valley, said the service is facing possible closure following a recent review and he told Parliament last week that the situation was "deeply concerning and risked the future" of families, businesses and the year-round community at Falls Creek.

“Falls Creek is not just a winter destination, it’s a year-round community that supports local families, workers and a major industry contributing $2.14 billion to Victoria’s economy,” he said.

“To even consider closing the childcare service over a $70,000 annual shortfall is short-sighted and economically irresponsible.

"Without childcare, many families will be forced to leave the mountain, and without families, Falls Creek simply cannot operate.”

Mr McCurdy said the announcement of another review came as a shock to the community, which had already undergone a review earlier this year in line with the Alpine Resorts Victoria corporate plan 2024–2027.

“Families believed the matter was settled after the initial review and were blindsided to learn that closure was again being considered,” he said.

“This uncertainty is causing enormous distress to parents who live and work on the mountain.”

Mr McCurdy said the Falls Creek childcare and kindergarten caters for local families year-round and serves as the main feeder to Falls Creek Primary School.

He said it removal would leave families with no viable alternative, as the nearest childcare centre in Mount Beauty is already at full capacity for 2026.

“Closing this service would make it impossible for families to live and work at Falls Creek, jeopardising local businesses and the resort’s ability to attract and retain staff,” Mr McCurdy said.

“I urge the Minister for Environment to directly intervene and ensure that this vital service continues, because the future of Falls Creek’s community and economy depends on it.”
