Myrtleford the place to be

MYRTLEFORD is making its name as a tourist destination with an influx of visitors over the summer holiday period, according to Jim van Geet from the Myrtleford Chamber of Commerce.

"This summer period has been hectic, with bigger numbers than previous years, perhaps with the exception of when the state reopened after COVID lockdowns," he said.

"It's really good for the town itself and also for the overall impression to visitors; we only received glowing reports from tourists who said the town has a nice, friendly atmosphere that they aren't finding in some other places.

"It does push us to our limits and beyond servicing visitors but it's been good and there were no major issues.

"It started to slow down as of last week with people heading back to work and the heatwave so it gives everyone a breather until the next big wave.

The Easter period, and really all of autumn, is usually our biggest trading time because everyone comes for the stable weather and the colours.

"We're already hearing some places are booked out for the easter period, and we know that many of the summer visitors have said they will make a point of coming back.

"I think we'll have lot of tourists around right through to the start of winter.

"Myrtleford is really starting to become a destination on its own rather than just someplace to drive through."

Myrtleford Holiday Park manager Jo Joyce mirrored Jim's statements and said their bookings are already full for Easter.

"We had a very full house over Christmas and the New Year, it was pretty full on from December 26 to January 9 so there was a lot of activity in the park," she said.

"Now people have had their holidays thats dropped off quite a bit but we've still have people coming in and lot of bookings going forward which is good.

"We're always full over Christmas so it's very much the same as previous years, as well as the Easter period.

"We did have quite a slow start to summer due to the flooding with people deciding to stay off the roads but that ramped up for the holidays."
