Consultation closed, final designs to be released

COMMUNITY consultation on the draft concept designs for the extended Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing closed on Sunday, with final designs to be released next year.

Hikers will soon have more options to cross from Mount Hotham to Falls Creek, with the State Government investing $15 million towards stage one of the 57 kilometre multi–day walk.

The designs from architects appointed in July this year include track upgrades and four overnight locations that will have up to nine small basic huts that blend in with the environment at each site.

The sites will be placed near existing huts such as Cope Hut (overnight one), Tawonga Hut (overnight two), West Kiewa Valley (overnight three) near the existing Blair Hut and High Knob (overnight four).

The sites will also feature up to eight camping platforms, small basic huts, a communal shelter and toilets.

The trail will be extended from its current 37km length to 57km by connecting a network of existing tracks and creating up to three kilometres of new track, which will also connect to the new overnight campground and protect sensitive environmental areas.

The facilities will form part of the five–day, four–night route, but will also be available for shorter overnight walks.

You can view a full interactive map of the sites on the project website.

Parks Victoria will provide a summary of community consultation findings now that engagement has closed and final designs are set to be released in 2023.

Stage one is expected to be completed in 2024.
