Spring cattle sales wind down with success

By ANDY WILSON

THE Matheson family of Whorouly South was pleased with their annual sale last Friday as they cleared the pens of all their stock on offer.

As the local spring cattle sales conclude for the year, Dan Matheson was pleased with the outcome of selling all 42 heifers and 73 steers from his family's business which is run by three generations of Mathesons.

"We're very happy with how it went, it was about what we expected in terms of price," Mr Matheson said.

The family breeds Poll Hereford cattle and take pride in producing high quality stock with good genetics.

All cattle were above 320 kilograms.

The best price for a pen of the family's heifers was $2240 and for a pen of steers was $2475.

Dan Ivone from nutrient Ag' Solutions described the sale as 'very strong' with all stock from 70 other vendors sold.

"The sale exceeded expectations," Mr Ivone said.

"The vendors have all gone home quite happy."

The weather had a minimal effect on attendance and cattle welfare was maintained in the pens despite the rain.

However, conditions on the Matheson's farm were different.

"All the paddocks at home are soggy," Mr Matheson said.

"It's only a problem when you're trying to work the cattle, at the moment we've got just enough dry spots, plenty of wet spots as well."
