Cattle production a family affair

NOTHING builds stronger cattle than generation after generation lovingly caring for them year on year.

Cattle like those belonging to Whorouly South producer Lisa Beach will be on display and up for grabs at Friday's Myrtleford Weaner Cattle Sale at the Paull & Scollard yards off the Great Alpine Road from 10.30am.

Ms Beach grew up in the business, and currently runs around 75 breeding Angus on the 440 acre family farm in Whorouly South.

"I grew up on the family farm and now my husband and I have pretty much taken over," she said.

"We've had a really great summer season for producing cattle, we've had some really favourable weather conditions."

Ms Beach will be taking some 35 head of mixed sex weaners to Friday's sale, one her cattle attend every year.

"We just recently sold a few cull cows, but we sold weaners last year at the same sale, we always sell at that sale," she said.

"Even then, the prices were pretty incredible.

"The upward trend has been pretty amazing to watch from this angle.

"The same would be amazing but from what I've heard and seen from the previous sales, I think prices are up a little bit on last year."

With the weather staring to turn, Ms Beach expects the cattle will hold their form heading into the winter months.

"Historically when we have a wet spring and summer, we generally have a drier winter season," she said.

"I think the forecast at this point is saying a wetter than average autumn, but I don't know much about the weather.

"Because we've got quite good feed stores from the large amount of rain that we have had, I'm expecting the cattle will hold their condition quite well into the winter months."

Some 2000 head of cattle will go under the hammer at Friday's Weaner Cattle Sale, set to kick off from 10.30am at the Paull & Scollard yards off the Great Alpine Road – the Elders sale will follow at 1.30pm at the yards down Howell Lane.
