NEW Year's Day at Merton was a cracker of a day for more than 1000 people who attended the annual Merton Amateur Turf Club Inc.'s annual race meeting.
A full six race card was set for keen racegoers with the main race of the day being the Elders Merton Cup.
Fashions on the field sections were also hotly contested from the youngest to the more elderly vying for some great prizes, all donated by local traders.
Gwenda Tait was once again in charge of the fashions which was compered this year by Alanna Storer and judged by Naomi Voss and Julie Duncan.

As well as the line up on the catwalk for fashions, judges wandered the grounds choosing from the many brightly coloured men's shirts, the best and runners up which were all awarded sashes and prizes.
Winners of the best shirts (two gents and a baby all matching) were Colin Green, Scott Reid and baby Kayce Reid.
Runners up in the shirts fashions included Alistair Tait and Ron Swifte.
