Early celebrations for Mother’s Day

A FAMILY meal was the theme for this year's early Mother's Day celebrations at both St Mary's Primary School and Myrtleford P-12 College last Friday, with the former hosting a breakfast and the latter a morning tea.

At St Mary's, more than 250 people enjoyed a breakfast to celebrate their beloved family members, with the mothers and grandmothers present treated to bacon and eggs as the students enjoyed delicious cereal.

“It was a very good morning", St Mary's administrator Lucia Southern said.

“The children were able to have a moment to enjoy a delicious breakfast with their mums and grandmothers.”

At Myrtleford P-12 College, grades prep to year six threw a morning tea for their beloved family members at recess, with tables set out in the glorious sunshine, among colourful decorations of tie-dyed tea towels and paper flowers students had worked on this term.

“Students have been working on pieces in the style of Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese artist, who recently had an exhibition of their work held at the National Gallery of Victoria,” art teacher, Kit Cartwright said.

“It’s been very popular; the kids have loved her colourful designs and they admire her because she’s 96-years-old.

“The students have made small pottery pieces, abstract paintings and paper-mâché sculptures.

“Their main project for Mother’s Day has been the tea-towels...they’ve written a small poem or message to their mothers, then tie-dyed them to create beautiful patterns.

“That was their gift to their mum.”

Jess Harris, who dropped in to enjoy morning tea with her two daughters, Savannah and Koby, said it was nice to see what the kids were working on in school.

“I like the tie-dye,” Ms Harris said.

“What’s not to like?

“They all look so beautiful and the pieces my girls have made are gorgeous.

“I’m also looking forward to the scones for morning tea; they’re great every year.”

While enjoying her daughter Adalina’s work, Jelena Pendek said the morning tea was also a great opportunity to catch up with other parents.

“I’m glad the morning tea was put on again this year,” she said.

“It’s been fantastic to see my daughter’s work and enjoy a meal at recess together.”
