IN a big step toward securing a second indoor stadium for Myrtleford, Alpine Shire Council will now seek funding from the Victorian Government.

Council hopes to secure $1.3 million from the Better Indoor Stadiums fund to expand the existing Myrtleford Indoor Sports Stadium to include a second basketball court.

The estimated cost of the stadium expansion is $2.6 million, with $1.3 million to be sought from grant funding and the remaining $1.3 million from council funds and other community partners.

Earlier this year a feasibility study concluded that there was strong demand for an additional indoor sports facility in Myrtleford.

Following initial stakeholder consultation the study focused on three options, to add a second court at the indoor facility at the Myrtleford Showgrounds, or to build a new indoor stadium at either Myrtleford P-12 College or Marian College.

Calls for a second indoor stadium first came in 2012 while $45,000 was allocated for the feasibility study in November, 2014.
