Runners hit heights

ULTRA EFFORT: Matt Murphy (black) was the second runner across the line in Saturday’s Buffalo Stampede.

WANDILIGONG’S Matt Murphy was the first Australian across the line in Saturday’s gruelling Buffalo Stampede 75km Ultra SkyMarathon.

The former triathlete and TV personality was second overall just over 20 minutes behind New Zealand runner Sam McCutcheon who finished in a time of 8hrs24mins51secs.

Murphy’s time of 8:45:34 was the second fastest by an Australian in the event after Andrew Tuckey’s effort of 8:28:40 last year.

Another Kiwi Danny Garrett was third behind Murphy, a further 13 minutes back.

The first woman to finish was 20 year old Lucy Bartholomew in a time of 9:51:06.

Murphy who shaved an hour and 10 minutes off his time from last year was happy with the result and said being able to train on the course was an advantage.
