DEDERANG Mt Beauty has put a tumultuous off season behind it and opened its Tallangatta and District football season with a 14-point win over Wodonga Saints.

Inaccuracy in front of goal was the only thing that kept last year’s wooden spooners, Wodonga in the contest as the Bombers led at every change in the 9.19 (73) to 8.11 (59) result.

Coach Ben Mitchell said his side had to work hard to earn their four points.

“Overall we are pretty happy with the effort, it was a real grind but we outlasted them in the end,” he said.

“Goal kicking was a bit of an issue for us but overall our fundamentals were pretty good, we played an honest brand of footy and our discipline was good.

“There is a bit to work on but it is a good start.”

After an off season of departures the Bombers had eight players line-up in their first games for the club while Winter Olympian Phil Bellingham was the standout for the home side.

“Phil got back into the country about a week ago and is going to have a run again,” Mitchell said.
