SEASON best figures from tearaway quick Nelum Kumara have kept Ovens Valley United’s slim finals hopes alive.

The Sri Lankan’s figures of 5/16 helped put his side in the box seat after the first day of the Tigers’ round 10 WDCA clash with Wangaratta Magpies.

Playing at McNamara Reserve for the first time since the opening day of the season the Tigers returned to the ground in style, dismissing Magpies for 122 before reaching 0/38 at the close of play.

Kumara might have been the star of the day claiming his first five wicket haul of the season and taking his wicket tally to 24 but he was well supported by James Neary (2/23) and Tim Ruaro (2/7).

Kumara made two early breakthroughs to have Magpies stuttering at 2/25 but Nicholas Hallam (22) and Hamish Cox (20) took the Magpies to the first drinks in a decent position.

Corey Southern struck shortly after the resumption dismissing Cox with the score 54 and a double strike by Ruaro with the wickets of Luke Sims and Nic Cox saw the Magpies fall to 5/84.
