OVENS Valley United has won its first game since the first round of this year’s Wangaratta and District cricket season, empathically defeating Beechworth on the weekend.
The reigning premiers were no match for the Tigers who were completely dominant with both bat and ball in the round 8 encounter.
Resuming at 1/51, the Tigers required another 50 runs on day two after Nelum Kumara (3/10) and Vitaly Leschen ripped through the Wanderers’ batting order with the help of James Neary (2/17) and Michael Newton (1/13) in the first innings of the match.
Former Wanderer Josh Newton, in his first game in Tigers colours after a knee reconstruction, led the visitors home with an attacking 70 from 85 balls with support from veteran Brad Piazza (29).
The two came together after losing three early wickets in the opening hour of play, Mark Butters (4/48) claiming the wickets of overnight batsmen Bernard Ruaro (13) and Scott McNamara (48) while Oliver Biddulph (5/57) dismissed captain Corey Southern for just one.
The Tigers went on to post 224, their best effort for the season, with Michael Newton (25) and Lachlan Hourigan (18) contributing runs down the order.
