Fire ignorance no excuse

FIRE authorities say there are no excuses and no apologies acceptable after a series of call-outs to unapproved burn-offs in the past week.

On Friday a fire came within 20 metres of a home on Buffalo River Road — the homeowner unaware of fire restrictions and left to fight the flames with a terry-towelling hat.

CFA Ovens Valley group officer Andrew Cross said it was one of four in a little more than seven days.

Fire restrictions came into force last week – authorities saying any fire caused by an unapproved burn will now be handed directly to police.

“The CFA, DELWP and Parks Victoria fire managers are sick and tired of people lighting fires in a Declared Fire Danger Period,” he said.

“We live in one of the most fire prone areas of the world and indiscriminate lighting of fires must stop.
