Police out in force for rod run

57 officers, a ‘brawler van’ and portable cells ready for trouble

ALMOST 60 police, portable cells and a “brawler van” will be deployed to Bright for Alpine Shire’s biggest tourist weekend — the Bright Iconic Rod Run.

Last year’s event was marred by anti-social behaviour and alcohol-fuelled violence.

Officers will also actively police a drinking curfew that bans alcohol in public places in the Bright CBD from 8.30pm until midday the next day during the weekend.

Victoria Police had initially called on the Alpine Shire Council to bar alcohol in public places for the entire event before councillors agreed to a compromise last month.

Bright police Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll hopes the curfew will have a positive impact.

“Unfortunately it’s the behaviour of a few or a minority that have affected the whole event and because of the extent of the anti-social behaviour last year we had no other options,” Snr Sgt Incoll said.
