$7.5m standstill

THE once ‘Grand Old Lady’ sitting atop Mt Buffalo has been left sitting idle since Parks Victoria called for expressions of interest for the chalet’s redevelopment in September, 2014, and two Alpine Shire residents are demanding answers.

Alpine Shire Council councillor Kate Farrell and local resident and Mt Buffalo Chalet supporter Bob Adams have questioned why Parks Victoria is yet to appoint a contractor to carry out the chalet’s $7.5 million redevelopment.

Sitting on the Mt Buffalo Chalet Community Forum as an Alpine Shire Council representative, Cr Farrell said enough time had been wasted and members of the Forum and the community were sick of being kept in the dark, and tenders received have indicated the $7.5 million in funding is insufficient complete the project “To be honest, I’m extremely frustrated by the whole episode, it’s just ridiculous,” she said.

“The tenders Parks Victoria has received have been way over budget and Parks Victoria has not been particularly honest about the whole situation.

“I believe this is the demise of the chalet and I don’t think they want people to stay up there.”

Cr Farrell said the Mt Buffalo Chalet Community Forum members want honesty and transparency from Parks Victoria.

“This will be the ninth winter she will be sitting idle since Burbank left – works were meant to have started on her early this year, but the rocks still sit on the ground from when they did the restumping in early 2014,” she said.
