Saints found wanting

HITTING OUT: (Clockwise from top left) Lyndon McIlroy looks for a boundary; Stuart Thomson on his way to a top score of 71; Matt Hunt celebrates after dismissing Nelum Kumara; Saints skipper Corey Southern takes off for a run.

Myrtleford’s hopes of appearing in a second straight one day final in Wangaratta and District cricket appear slim after going down to Beechworth in last Saturday’s twenty20 at McNamara Reserve.

After choosing to bat first the Saints could only manage a score of 8/107, while in reply Beechworth passed Myrtleford’s score in the 17th over before finishing their 20 overs on 4/128.

After losing Steve Marotta in the first over, Geof Sundstrom (34) and Luke Wentworth (23) consolidated, batting patiently to add 50 before Sundstrom was dismissed with the score on 51.

Needing to get a move on in the final 10 overs captain Corey Southern (12) and Lyndon McIlroy (14) upped the tempo but with a regular fall of wickets it made things tough for the home side as they eventually scrambled to 107.

Defending a smallish total the Saints needed early wickets and Nelum Kumara (2/15) came out firing.

In the first over he rapped Beechworth opener Matt Hunt on the pads with his first three balls before having him caught behind with the fourth ball of the over.
