WHEN you see the height and witness the leaping ability of Myrtleford teenager Christian Paynter it is not hard to understand why he is excelling in the sports of basketball and high jump.

Paynter represents Wangaratta and the North East in basketball but it’s in high jump that he is making the biggest mark.

The 17-year-old Cathedral College student will represent Victoria in one-and-a-half weeks at the Australian All-Schools Athletics Championships in Adelaide.

After winning school, zone, regional, state and all-state high jump competitions this year he will now compete against the country’s best secondary school high jumpers in Adelaide from December 5-7.

Paynter’s recent success in the sport is something he said has come out of nowhere.

“I have surprised myself by continually winning this year and now I’m competing in nationals which I’m definitely excited for,” Paynter said.
